The American flag is the nation’s most recognizable symbol. The flag is a way to celebrate freedom and show patriotism. In order to protect the integrity of the flag, many regulations, including how the flag is displayed, have been put into place by the government.
In 2008, construction began on the
North Shore Ice Arena, in Northbrook, Illinois. The 45,000 square foot facility, anticipated 650,000 visitors during its inaugural year.
Nesko Electric, Inc. was contracted to install lighting and wiring for the entire facility including parking lot and perimeter lighting.
“Since this was an ice arena with visitors coming and going frequently during the evening, illuminating for safety was a top priority,” said John Winberg, project manager for Nesko Electric.

Prior to 1985, exit signage primarily used incandescent or compact fluorescent lamps for illumination. The introduction of
Energy Star® requirements combined with a greater public awareness of energy-efficient technology helped to grow popularity of the LED exit sign. LED exit signs average about 6 watts compared to 32 watts for incandescent and 17 watts for compact fluorescent sources.
In the spring of 2008, Specialized Electric was contracted to install lighting and electrical for the University of Wisconsin (UW) Medical Foundation, a new construction project in Middleton, Wis. Ken Berg and Dennis Schlimgen, owners of Specialized Electric selected a fixture package from Ruud Lighting that included a mix of products for interior and exterior applications.

The Energy Independence and Security Act, passed in 2007, is an energy policy designed to increase energy-efficiency and the availability of renewable energy. A key provision of the Act sets new efficiency standards for ballasts used in metal halide (MH) lamp fixtures, and goes into effect on January 1, 2009.
If energy efficiency is your main goal, fluorescent luminaires
are a viable solution. Because fluorescent lamps are more efficient at creating light, they generate less heat saving as much as 50 to 80 percent in energy consumption compared to incandescent lamps and 75 percent versus high-intensity discharge lamps (HID).

It’s hard to believe the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) show is right around the corner. This year’s show, October 4-7 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, is slated to be the best yet with more new products, sessions, and manufacturers. The Ruud Lighting booth will feature several other divisions of the company.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 100 million exit signs are operating within facilities in the U.S. Most exit signs are illuminated 24 hours and the majority use incandescent lamps that consume close to $1 billion worth of energy annually. There is an alternative that significantly reduces energy consumption and maintenance costs.
