Exactly How Does Energy Savings Help the Earth?
Smart lighting practices can make positive changes on the environment
The message these days is clear…conserve energy to reduce the impact on our environment. Whether reducing energy usage through efficient HVAC systems, recycling paper and other materials or car pooling, what does it all mean and how can lighting make a difference?
Designing and installing energy-efficient lighting systems can significantly reduce energy consumption. According to recent studies, nearly $1 million worth of energy is spent each minute in the U.S. The Department of Energy estimates that lighting accounts for 20 percent of all electricity consumed, an annual total of $37 billion. Unfortunately, it also equates to 10 percent of all carbon dioxide released into the environment.
We can significantly reduce the amount of energy consumed by lighting by implementing environmentally friendly lighting practices such as:
- Upgrading to fluorescent lamps
- Installing occupancy sensors
- Using daylight harvesting techniques
- Using high-efficiency lamps and ballasts

Energy Star concludes that reducing the energy consumed for lighting by 10 percent in one year will:
- Remove 202 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (the equivalent of removing 15 million cars from the road), the primary cause of global climate change
- Remove more than 1.3 million metric tons of sulfur dioxide, a key contributor to acid rain
- Remove 600,000 metric tons of nitrogen oxide, a contributor to smog
It’s important to stay educated on the latest developments in energy efficiency. Even the smallest changes can make a big difference.
