Envisioning Success with a Ruud Lighting Layout

Any lighting project can be made easier to envision and successfully complete with knowledgeable assistance over the phone or an expertly assembled lighting layout. Ruud Lighting can quickly provide either for your next project—free of charge—and it’s easy to get started.

According to Ruud Lighting’s National Accounts Sales Engineer, Eric Hardesty, everything from a CAD rendering to a sketch on a paper napkin can be used as a starting point. “The quality of the drawing or plan is not the main issue,” he says. “While a higher quality CAD drawing will certainly make it easier to quickly and accurately meet your needs, what’s most important is the quality of the information that you give us about the space.”

Plans and sketches can be sent via email, fax or “snail mail,” and you can request application assistance for an outdoor project at www.ruudlighting.com/buy_direct/appreqout.asp, and indoor projects at www.ruudlighting.com/buy_direct/appreqin.asp. There’s also a tear out form for application assistance in the back of your Ruud Lighting catalog which you can fax to:
(800) 236-7500.

If the space to be lit is an interior, be sure to include the ceiling height in your specifications. For a basic rectangular space, simple length and width are all you need for room dimensions. However, for a space with “interesting angles,” alcoves and other geometry, you’ll need to carefully measure and note all dimensions. Also, note any fixtures—such as desks, racks, tables, etc.—that will obstruct light.

You can establish lighting specifications for the space, or have Ruud Lighting determine the specs based on recommended practices and industry standards.

“For exterior projects,” Hardesty advises, “you’ll save a lot of time down the line if you tell us about all local lighting ordinances that apply to your site.”

Ruud can also, of course, work with detailed CAD drawings. Files in AutoCAD 2004 or earlier are preferred, and for the most comprehensive layout possible, AutoCAD DWG files should include all cross-referenced layers.

That’s all there is to it. A detailed lighting layout can be turned out in about three days, but shorter time frames are always possible with advance notice. We’ll be able to quote you an exact turnaround time after seeing your information.

We look forward to shedding light on your next project!
