 Quality Ruud Products Help Contractor Win Bid

Zierden Manufacturing Company had a lighting problem. The shop was poorly lit, which made it difficult for machine operators to safely do their jobs. Zierden needed to fix the problem quickly to improve safety and increase productivity.

Enter Barry Dickinson of Roman Electric. Zierden asked Dickinson to illuminate Zierden’s machine shop. To win the bid, Dickinson knew he would need an excellent project plan that included energy-saving products. So he called his go-to company: Ruud Lighting.

Identifying the Problem
Before Dickinson was hired by Zierden, the machine shop was illuminated by two 400-watt metal halide fixtures. The area was dimly lit and it was hard for workers to see machine numbers and perform daily tasks. “The light wasn’t bright enough and the overall distribution wasn’t broad enough,” Dickinson explained. “The building manager wanted to save energy and improve the light levels of the area.”

So Dickinson called Ruud’s application engineering team for assistance. He explained the job criteria and Ruud helped him lay out the perfect plan for his project. Ruud recommended that Dickinson replace the two metal halide lights with six linear fluorescent fixtures. This resulted in a well-lit machine shop with even light distribution, while cutting energy costs too.

“I was in tight competition for this job with another company,” Dickinson said, “but I won the bid because the manager was impressed with the quality of Ruud’s products. That’s what clinched the bid for me.”

The building manager was impressed with Dickinson’s plan from the beginning. But after seeing the completed project, the manager recommended Dickinson to other companies.

“He thought the fixtures were phenomenal,” Dickinson said. “The difference in light before and after the installation was amazing. Now the guys who work in the shop can see the machine numbers and everything else they’re working on. We accomplished our goal.”

The project resulted in a positive change for Zierden and a positive recommendation for Dickinson and Roman Electric. Ruud helped Dickinson draft his plan, supply the products that clinched the bid, and enhance his reputation within the industry.
