LEED
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system is designed to promote design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing the negative environmental impacts of buildings. One of LEED’s main goals is to improve occupant health and well-being. The program is administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, a Washington D.C.-based, nonprofit coalition of building industry leaders.
The LEED system evaluates buildings in five areas: sustainability of the construction site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Points are awarded to projects for certain features to determine the building's level of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
LEED standards cover new commercial construction, major renovation projects, interior projects and existing building operations. Standards are under development to cover commercial "core & shell" construction, new home construction and neighborhood developments.
