There’s More to LED Exit Signs Than Energy Saving

Additional product benefits propel growth of technology

Prior to 1985, exit signage primarily used incandescent or compact fluorescent lamps for illumination. The introduction of
Energy Star® requirements
combined with a greater public awareness of energy-efficient technology helped to grow popularity of the LED exit sign.  LED exit signs average about 6 watts compared to 32 watts for incandescent and 17 watts for compact fluorescent sources.

While LED exit signs contribute 52 percent of the total energy savings attributable to LED lighting, the technology offers many additional benefits beyond energy and maintenance savings.

Longer Life – offers operating life 25 times longer than traditional incandescent sources; significantly reducing maintenance costs and mitigating liability from failed lamps.

Improved Safety –if one LED fails, the others stay lit helping to eliminate the possibility of a total fixture failure.

Battery Back-up Available – automatic brownout protection switches the sign to battery operation when the AC voltage drops below 80 percent of nominal. Occupants are still able to see an exit route despite a power outage. And no secondary lamp is needed!

Better for the Environment- in addition to reduced energy, using LED exit signs can eliminate 500-pounds of greenhouse gas emissions or the equivalent of idling a car for 10 minutes each day for one year.

Improved Color and Uniformity – LED light delivers better color consistency and illumination over time compared to traditional lamps.

It’s easy to understand why more than 85 percent or 30 million of all exit signs installed in the U.S. use LED technology.  There’s a lot more to this light than meets the eye.

Ruud Lighting is offering special pricing on select exit signage through April 15. For help selecting the right exit sign for your next project or for layout options, contact our Application Engineering Team at (800) 236-7000.
