Proper Etiquette is Key to Lighting “Old Glory”

Guidelines for appropriate lighting of the U.S. Flag

The American flag is the nation’s most recognizable symbol. The flag is a way to celebrate freedom and show patriotism. In order to protect the integrity of the flag, many regulations, including how the flag is displayed, have been put into place by the government.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, flags are traditionally displayed from sunrise to sunset but can be presented continuously if properly illuminated during nighttime hours. The flag must be clearly visible at all times regardless of wind direction or visibility

Flag Lighting Guidelines:

  • In most instances, a single ground mounted metal halide fixture placed in close proximity (2’ to 5’) to the base of the flagpole will provide sufficient illumination to the flag.

  • Depending on the height of the pole and the ambient light levels in the area, various wattages and/or fixture types should be considered

  • These recommendations are based on moderate light levels in a moderately lit area. If light levels in the area are higher, the wattage must increase.  Likewise, if the area is dimly lit, lower wattages may be used.

As a precaution, check local Dark Sky guidelines on using flood lights for flagpole illumination. Many flood lights can be ordered with glare shields or internal louvers that help to direct light into the targeted area.
