Project Overview: Keeping Safety Top of Mind

In 2008, construction began on the North Shore Ice Arena, in Northbrook, Illinois.  The 45,000 square foot facility, anticipated 650,000 visitors during its inaugural year.

Nesko Electric, Inc. was contracted to install lighting and wiring for the entire facility including parking lot and perimeter lighting.

“Since this was an ice arena with visitors coming and going frequently during the evening, illuminating for safety was a top priority,” said John Winberg, project manager for Nesko Electric.

Winberg selected 250-Watt Metal Halide, 20-inch AeroDome™ fixtures for the parking area.  A portion of the fixtures featured Type IV optics and others used Type III optics with backlight shields.  The 22 fixtures were mounted on 15’ square steel poles with side-arm mounts and spaced 65’ to 70’ apart.  With higher footcandle averages and better uniformity ratios, AeroDome reduced the amount of fixtures required for the project.

“The quality of Ruud’s fixtures and poles are always great,” said Winberg.  “I’ve never had any problems. AeroDome fixtures perform very well and also look really sharp which is why we selected them for the project.”

In addition, eight MGWC 12-inch full cutoff wall packs were mounted around the perimeter of the building for added security. The selected wall packs help control forward throw without light spill or glare and met village anti-glare ordinances. “The products were all very easy and quick to install,” added Winberg. 

“Our customer was very happy with the end result,” said Winberg. “That’s why we like working with Ruud Lighting.”
