Using 50% to 80% More Energy Than You Should Be?
Understanding the environmental benefits of fluorescent lighting
If energy efficiency is your main goal, fluorescent luminaires are a viable solution. Because fluorescent lamps are more efficient at creating light, they generate less heat saving as much as 50 to 80 percent in energy consumption compared to incandescent lamps and 75 percent versus high-intensity discharge lamps (HID).
Energy savings, rebate incentives and lower cost of ownership are great ways to motivate customers to switch to fluorescent lamps. If that’s still not enough, there are a number of environmental aspects that we could all benefit from.
Less Air, Water and Soil Pollution: Replacing one incandescent lamp to a compact fluorescent lamp in each household in the U.S. is a pollution reduction equivalent to removing one million cars from our highways.
Less Landfill Waste: Since fluorescent lamps last 10 times longer than incandescents and most components are recyclable, it means that less waste is put into landfills.
Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions: When we reduce energy production, we also lower the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) or greenhouse gases released into the air. CO2 is a product of producing energy.
Less Fossil Fuels Used: Higher energy usage has caused a depletion of coal, used by coal-fired plants to create electricity.
Environmental Awareness: Making your customers aware of how they can help the environmental efforts by changing to fluorescent lamps empowers them to become part of the bigger solution.
Balancing the needs of building occupants with the goals or requirements of your lighting project can be tricky. You can certainly build a great case to retrofit from HID sources to fluorescent lamps by reinforcing efficiency, energy savings, versatility, high quality of light and all the environmental advantages. Plus, you still have until December 15 to help your customers take advantage of rebate incentives.
