LED Exit Signs Point the Way to Big Savings

Technology helps reduce costs associated with operating exit signage

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than 100 million exit signs are operating within facilities in the U.S. Most of these exit signs are illuminated 24 hours and the majority use incandescent lamps that consume close to $1 billion worth of energy annually.

These less than efficient incandescent lamps need relamping every 500 to 2,000 hours. This adds to operating costs and creates safety issues for building occupants if spent lamps are not replaced quickly.

Recent advances in lighting technology provide a smart, new solution. LED exit signs are the most energy-efficient and economical option delivering excellent visible light, significant energy savings, and low maintenance costs. While the initial replacement cost may be higher, payback can typically be achieved in less than four years.

Most LED exit signage features lower input power of about four watts or less and deliver a life rating of 25 years with minimal maintenance. Compared to incandescent lamps, LED signs are approximately 94 percent less expensive to operate. That’s a pretty big savings! LED exit signage is available with red or green diodes and can be constructed using materials such as edge-lit, die-cast aluminum and plastic. Combination battery backup and exit signage is also available depending upon the requirements of the facility.
